For Ma Wing-shing, time is what it takes to becoming a successful comic artist
Comic artist Ma Wing-shing is no stranger to deadline pressure. "I am very aware of keeping to my schedule. My comic, [wind and cloud], is published bi-weekly, so I repeat the process of brainstorming, drawing, producing and printing every fortnight. I have been doing that for more than 30 years," he says.
Ma's passion for comics dates back to year five in primary school. "I read a lot of comics from Hong Kong and Japan. Soon I started drawing sketches on notebooks and later found some classmates who were also interested to create our own stories," he says.
"I produced when I was in my 20s. Back then, I didn't have any burden, so I just drew what I wanted. I finished that with the motivation of a youngster," he says.
" represented my pursuit to combine comics with arts, and I would say I matured a lot when producing . It's impossible for me to choose a favourite work because all of them represent me in different phases. These accumulated [works] form the path of my career. They all have flaws, but at the same time have irreplaceable values."
When it comes to the comic that he enjoyed producing the most, Ma manages to pick one which could be the least expected.
